According to a recent study, it was found that youth in their late teens are four times more likely to commit suicide than those who live in better neighborhoods. It was also found that these kids from poor neighborhoods were twice as likely to report suicidal thoughts.
The study showed

that late teens from disadvantaged neighborhoods had higher levels of depressive symptoms along with lower levels of social support. Although it is not entirely clear why this is so. It is thought that they were more vulnerable because difficult events, such as personally knowing someone who has committed suicide or experiencing a painful breakup with a romantic partner, apparently led to increased suicidal thoughts or attempts,” says Véronique Dupéré, lead author and a post-doctoral fellow at Tufts University who completed the research at the Université de Montréal. “In other words, difficult events seemed to have a more dramatic impact on these teenagers.”
With they way the economy has been shaping lately, it can be a disturbing thought that we might expect more of these as harder times arrive. All we can do is hope and pray.
